When Success Depletes Its Source: How Hidden Costs Accumulate Across an Interconnected System

Part 3 explores how incomplete economic models can reward short-term performance while concealing the long-term costs of ecological degradation, social harm, and systemic risk. Through the example of the 2008 financial crisis, it shows how excluded relationships and delayed feedback allow vulnerabilities to accumulate beneath the appearance of stability. The article argues that extraction can create the scarcity it assumes by weakening the regenerative capacities on which future success depends. Regenerative systems design must therefore measure not only current performance, but also whether the relationships sustaining the system remain healthy, resilient, and capable of renewal.
